Marjorie A. Murphy Elementary Education Memorial Scholarship
Marjorie Ann was born on December 22, 1929 in Lancaster, Wisconsin. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin- Platteville in 1950 with a B.A. in Elementary Education. While attending Platteville, Marjorie met the love of her life, Joseph Murphy. After graduation, they were married in 1952 in Lancaster. After teaching full-time, a job change in the early 1960’s brought the couple across the state to Beaver Dam, where they settled down to raise their family. During that time, Marge kept busy with their four children while also working as a substitute teacher. This, from a fellow teacher: “Marge was one of my very favorite people ever. She subbed in my classroom many times and I always knew my students were in great hands. She was organized and oh so pleasant. I will miss her warm greetings and smile.”
Margie was a regular at the YMCA. On the weekends, she and the family enjoyed boating, water skiing and camping. Most of all, however, “Mudgie,” which was her family nickname, loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren doing arts and crafts, attending their school activities or coordinating talent shows at the family cottage. For the past 20 plus winters, she was in constant motion in an active retirement community with her husband, family and friends in Arizona. Very active, a bright smile and eternally optimistic, “Queenie” as Joey called her, got things done. Margie loved to “visit” with people, was eager to learn as much as she could from them with a thousand questions and genuine interest.
