Edythe Daniel Memorial Scholarship

Edythe Evelyn Daniel, age 93, died Feb. 12, 2003, in Platteville. She was born June 17, 1909, in the Welsh settlement of Blaen-y-Cae near Fox Lake, Wisconsin. She grew up on the hilltop farm just north of Cambria, WI and graduated from Beloit College in 1931 with a degree in secondary English, speech, and Latin. Her first teaching job was at Orfordville High School from 1931-1936. Then she taught speech and organized a citywide guidance program in Kenosha from 1937-1946. In 1947, she began a 30-year career at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. For 17 years she joyfully taught junior high English at the Doudna Laboratory School. While at the Lab School, she was author and contributing editor of a junior high literature series for Scott, Foresman. The next challenge she enjoyed was teaching classes to prepare English and speech teachers, and supervising off-campus student teachers. She retired in 1976 after 46 years of teaching and learning. Edie, as
she was affectionately known by her family and friends, will be remembered as an incredible organizer, exceptional writer, quintessential teacher, loving aunt, and loyal friend. She was very happy that so many of her students kept in touch with her for so many years.
