Bates Engineering, Inc., Bob Bates, Diana Horner Bates, and Russell Hooker
Bates Engineering, Inc., located in Denver, Colorado is pleased to present a scholarship to a civil engineering student with a career interest in fluid mechanics or structural engineering. In 1965 Bob Bates enrolled as a freshman at what was then Wisconsin State University-Platteville It is our goal to invest in the future of students at UW-Platteville, and to recognize and thank professors such as, Earl McCullough, Ken Buttry, Dick Adams, and Keith Faherty, that were instrumental in providing the foundation for Bob’s SO-year career and success. Bates Engineering was established in 1991 by Bob Bates, PE, (UW-Platteville class of January 1970) to provide heavy civil structural engineering and bridge design services to public and private sector clients. Prior to forming Bates Engineering Bob had worked for engineering firms in Denver, Colorado, since 1974. Before moving to Denver Bob was an engineer with the Wisconsin DOT Bridge Design Section. Bob also worked for the WiDOT for two summers as an engineering technician on roadway and bridge construction projects. Diana Horner Bates, PE, (University of Washington, 1969) founded her firm, Plains Engineering, in 1984 to provide structural engineering services. With an eye toward retirement we merged Plains Engineering with Bates Engineering in 2001. Retirement was optimistic. Today, Bates Engineering is known for the design of large capacity post-tensioned concrete water storage tanks having designed over 60 tanks, up to 400-feet in diameter and wall 32-feet high, constructed in Colorado ranging in capacity from 1 to 30 Million Gallons with a cumulative storage of over 300 Million Gallons, complex structures such as hydroelectric turbine houses, penstock, and tail race designs, and physical scale model flow studies of water circulation and mixing in circular and non-circular water storage tanks.
