William P. Gardner ('37) and Jane Liddle Gardner ('39) Endowed Scholarship

Bill Gardner and his wife Jane Liddle met while students at Platteville State Teachers College in the late 1930s. Both were leaders among their peers, playing basketball, working on the Pioneer yearbook, and serving as the president of multiple clubs. Shortly after beginning his teaching career, Bill served three years in the National Guard and served as a lieutenant in the U. S. Navy until 1946. He later completed an additional 21 years in the Naval Reserves. Jane also taught for short periods of time, but most of her days were devoted to the many needs of their seven children, six of whom graduated from UW-Platteville. The children and the spouses of the children of Bill and Jane Gardner created this scholarship in honor of their beloved parents.

The following criteria shall be used in the annual selection of the recipient(s):
1. Applicants must be of sophomore standing
2. Applicants must be majoring in Education
