A former UW-Platteville professor of mathematics and Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, Mr. George Bullis, established an endowed scholarship for mathematics students to be awarded to an entering freshman who is intending to major in mathematics or a related field. George created the scholarship to facilitate the recruitment of good students to Platteville. George said that Roy Smith of the Physics Department had a vision to advance UW-Platteville by recruiting good mathematics students to Engineering, Mathematics and Science. These students would then attract other quality students to

George H. Kettler was born on February 7, 1912, in Elk Grove, Wisconsin to Fred and Sophia (Riechers) Kettler. He lived on a farm and attended a rural school. Later, the family moved to Platteville where he attended Hamner Robins and the Old Brick School. As the tallest boy in his class and a good student, he graduated from Platteville High School in 1931. As a teenager, George developed an interest in insects, especially butterflies, and made a large collection, mounting them in an antique frame. He also had a small mail business in moths, butterflies, caterpillars, etc. George made life

Gerald Olin Gunderson was a man who thought in geological time—in eras and epochs rather than years. Born into a family of educators on New Year’s Day 1942,in a family who valued education, curiosity, and hard work. These values shaped his remarkable life. The Gunderson kids grew up working on their family’s Christmas tree farm in Waushara County, planting and pruning trees in the chill of spring and selling them in the bitter cold of winter. Glenn R. Davis was born in 1914 on a farm in the town of Vernon. Davis graduated from Mukwonago High School at the age of 16. Davis was a 1934 graduate of the State Teachers College in Platteville and taught high school for four years after that. Davis graduated from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1940, the same year he was elected to the state Assembly. But Davis resigned before his term was up to join the Navy in World War II. In the war, Davis served as a lieutenant and as communications officer aboard the USS Sangamon in the South Pacific. The ship won nine battle stars before

Harriet Gibbon dedicated 35 years of her life to educating Wisconsin students and took great pride in her profession. Born in Lafayette County near the Welsh settlement between Rewey and Belmont, Wisconsin, Harriet attended a one-room country school herself before graduating from Platteville High School in 1934 and Platteville Teachers College in 1936. She later earned her B.S. degree in education in 1948. Harriet began her teaching career in one-room country schools, including Pleasant Valley in rural Boscobel and Bunker Hill in rural Platteville. She went on to teach in Montfort, Belmont,

Jewell Associates Engineers, Inc. was established in 1993. Greg Jewell P.E., R.L.S. began the company with the intent of providing civil engineering services specializing in bridge and structure design while living in Southwest Wisconsin. Today the company has grown to include providing professional engineering, surveying and architectural services for transportation, structural, buildings, development and environmental projects. Their growth would not have been possible without the skills and leadership of the engineers hired from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. The purpose of this

Growing up on an 80-acre farm in southwest Wisconsin, JoAnne never even imagined attending college. Her life’s course was changed in 1969 by the state of Wisconsin with a tuition free semester scholarship. Five years later in 1973, she completed a B.A. degree with Honors and a Master of Arts degree in Education. The University of Wisconsin-Platteville made that possible. She established the Melvin and Helen Uthe Memorial Scholarship in honor of her parents, who completed eighth grade, so that others may have an opportunity of receiving a higher education like she had.

The Jones Family Engineering Scholarship was established by John and Catherine (Van Natta) Jones, both Platteville natives, to honor their families’ four-generation connection to UW-Platteville. John’s father, Dr. Reginald “Jack” Jones, graduated from the Mining School and later served as a professor in the mining engineering department. John earned his mining engineering degree in 1985.

This scholarship was created by John Kincaid in memory of his former wife, Teresa. Teresa was a licensed professional engineer in the State of Wisconsin who held a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from UW-Platteville and a Master of Science Degree in Water Resources Management from the University of Wisconsin. She was one of those individuals more concerned with making a difference than making a fortune. Teresa joined the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as a civil engineer with the Rock Island District in 1981, and continued with the Corps for 26 years. In that time, she served
